Msconfig?

Post by Chip Fossa »

A few posts back, I think Jim Cohen asked about 'startup' and disabling certain things
within MSCONFIG.
Well, I went ahead and carefully[?] disabled a few things, and sure enough the pc did get a bit quicker. And everything was goin' along like it should, until I went to use the HP ScanJet [4100C] scanner. 1st off, the unit didn't even power up to warm-up the scanning bulb [like no voltage
present].
Then an error flag popped up and said that something else was running at the same time
that the scanner was trying to run and was conflicting with it. It went on to say, wait for this program to stop or turn it off now.
I checked device manager and there are 3
USB configurations. The main one, and 2 sub ones.
Seems OK, IOW's.
Do you think I have to go back into MSCONFIG and enable something that is probably causing this? Could the voltage
transformer that came with the scanner be burnt up; not sending any power to the unit?
How can you test a one-plug female jack
for conductivity. If it was a 2-plug common
power cord I could simply test for current with the 2-prong light probe.

Sorry about this being long-winded; and thanks in advance everyone.

Whatever you did in MSCONFIG should not interfere with the scanner powering up. I have an HP4100C scanner and it has a "wall wart" power supply and it's not controlled by the software in any way.

There is one statement that needs to be in the msconfig for the scanner front panel buttons to work. The HPSCANmon must be enabled. That's all that I know of that would affect the scanner (or at least in my Compaq).

You say you have three items shown as being on USB. Make sure the other items are powered down and then see what happens.

Hello Jack,
That's just it...I haven't a clue as to
how to locate this 'other' program that's interferring?
What 'items' to power down?

The HPSCANmon was one of the statements I
did disable, but is now back up.
I also uninstalled the scanner and then reinstalled it again, but the same problem is still here.
As far as I can tell [unless it's running in the background] there is or has not been any other percievable program running, when the scanner was called up.

Make sure only the scanner is connected to the USB port(s) nothing else.

I overlooked the part in your original post about three in the device manager. Delete the two sub ones and then restart windows. Or you could delete all three and restart windows and it should "find new hardware" and install the USB port. Maybe that will get it straightened out.

Jack,
It must be a wonderful feeling to know what one is doing.
Removing all the USB settings from Device Manager, and then restarting the pc did the trick.
As a matter of fact, on start-up, when the
the pc said it was looking for drivers for devices, the 4100C was specifically mentioned.
At 1st there was one slight glich, however.
I scanned a document and everything was moving along fine, until I sent the scan to the printer. Instead of printing, the printer quickly shot the piece of paper right on thru lickity-split without nothing getting printed.
So then I tried printing something else [non-scanned] and the printer responded properly.
Then I ran a Scanner Test from 'programs'
and the 1st time thru, that sharing application flag popped up again; but I did have the scanner in the 'diminished' postion with a scan already in place.
So I shut the scanner off, ran the test again and everything came OK on the test.
Then I rescanned the above document and sent it to printer and it printed out.

I know this got a little lengthy, and I
don't know how or why it straightened itself out, but thanks once again, Jack, for your expert advise.

Chip, thanks. That was my day job before I retired (Networking and Help Desk) and I still remember a little.

And, like I said in another post, I know how to hold my mouth when I'm troubleshooting. Image
