Dave passed away this pat friday at home in Goodletsville
The accomplishments are far too many to list. Sufficed to say upright slap bass with the greats from Cash to Reed to Yoakum. RIP

Oh no! I have seen him in a three piece band with Rick Vito and also on a Cash show. After the Vito gig in a small club (with not a large crowd attending) I helped him carry some stuff out to the lorry. He told me that he was formerly with Johnny Cash.

I so hated to get the phone call the day Dave passed. A musician's musician, and a good friend for many, many years. We were roommates on a Vince Gill tour in 1989 (just before Vince hit it really big, and was able to fulfill a lifelong dream by hiring John Hughey!) and never lost touch and still played occasional gigs and sessions.

He was so versatile and an important part of so many different genres and scenes in this town. A lot of us knew him early on as a strictly electric player who would play funk/jazz/R&B gigs in town between tours with Dottie West or Jerry Reed or whoever. He only started playing upright when he joined Cash, and quickly became the go-to guy for the rockabilly/slap thing, and inspired lots of other players in that style. He never stopped playing electric though - in the studio and in his bands with Kenny Vaughan in recent years he played both.

Always a ball to play with, and a very funny guy! He will be missed...!

Bump, in memory of a great musician and great human being. A lot of us here in town really miss him, and think and talk of him often.

I first became aware of Dave Roe when I saw The Kenny Vaughn Trio play. Of course, Kenny was super but I kept asking myself who the hell was that great bass player playing with him. He and the drummer just nailed the pocket on every tune. The thing was, all the other musicians I was with were floored by his playing, too.

Bill, thanks for the link to that interview with Dave. So interesting to hear all the road stories and insights into the character of the many artists he worked with. Sorry to hear that he is gone.
