Old Sho Bud D10 (new to me) - looking for info

Post by Tim Bennett »

Hey friends,

I picked up a new D10 Sho Bud, I believe serial number 7483. At this moment I'm looking for info on the model - I haven't been able to figure it out just yet, only vague ideas of what year range it's from. I guess the next questions would be around any limitations I might have in changing the copedent.

I'm an E9 player, but I'd be keen to set it up as best I can to learn C6. I've not even set it up to figure out the current one, but at the very least I'd be keen to get the E levers onto my left leg, like my E9 guitars have. It's currently got 7 pedals in, but it looks like there's space for an 8th one.

It was apparently in storage for a couple of decades so it's going to be a resto job no matter what. Any info would be grand, thanks in advance.

I defer to the S/B experts, but that appears to be a 70s/later Baldwin Crossover. There's a hole in the rear apron where the lever used to be. The idea was to use the pedals on both necks by throwing the pulling mechanism from one side to the other.

Problems ensued for some changing necks with that lever as the parts could fall out if switched at the wrong time.

To my tired eyes, looks like that crossover device has all been removed. The fret boards have been changed also.

The frame is also a hint that's what it is. There also would have been a Baldwin decal on the left side near the end plate.

The mechanics are rack and barrel. Same as a few other era models such as The Professional.

Those guitars have a nice sound.

The rear neck should already be tuned in C6, least it was from the factory.

I'm not the one to advise you on how to proceed with any modifications or setups on that model though. Good luck.

Hey Jerry, thank you for this - super useful info!

Have checked it against some other crossovers and that's definitely it - seems like there were a lot of small differences in the undercarriage designs over the years, so none of the listings I can find online are quite exact, but close.

I set it up yesterday and the thing I was most worried about was the fact that the pedals were so much closer to the centre of the guitar than normal (presumably because of the cross over mechanism). Ends up it was fine. The thing is going to need some deep cleaning before it's really playable, but I've always wanted an excuse to buy an ultrasonic cleaner, so here it is.

If anyone is interested, here's the current copedent (or what it's supposed to be). If any of the C6 players out there have any suggestions on whether this is a decent copedent to start learning I'd love to hear it (or any changes I should make while I'm first cleaning and setting it up). There's a spare change on the C6 neck which looks to have been removed - presumably there was another level there at some stage - which does the same changes as a standard P4 (A's up to B's) - so I might try to restore that at some point.

Your setup looks just fine Tim. That is a standard C6 tuning with standard changes. I don't see any reason to change anything.

Some players use a G on top, but many modern thinkers use the D like you have.

The A note to ++B is also a nice change so I would encourage you to restore that when you can.

Enjoy!
