1972 MSA D-12 case options

Post by James L Barnes »

Hello new friends (he says cautiously making his first post)…

I have come into possession of a 1972 MSA D-12 classic. The instrument has seen a few days, but is in great condition in many ways. I have no idea what I’m doing, but I enjoy tinkering with instruments and mechanics, so it seemed to be an ideal project for me to learn (and no i will not be diving into doing any kind of work on the thing until we get to know each other).

Preamble aside, the original case that it came with is probably not worth salvaging. The left side plywood is crumbling, separated from the body of the case and the metal bracing is corroded and rusted. Does anyone have any information on replacement cases that would fit this era of D-12? Ideally I’d love something modern and ABS formed to reduce weight, but I’ll take what I can get.

I don’t expect the thing to be leaving the house much, so it’s a curiosity more than a priority. Any help from the community would be appreciated.

Contact Kevin Hatton who makes cases. If it is a D12, he can make a split case for you. http://www.hattoncases.net/

The steeler that played for Neon Cactus, A local band, In 1990's. Had a red MSA D12 Classic. Helped him load out a couple times. He stated the guitar in case, Weighed 91 lb. on his bathroom scale.
Split cases would be a good case setup for this guitar.

But No Case. Would be a good excuse, If someone wanted you to gig that guitar.
Have to eat your Wheaties to gig that guitar, Every Friday and Saturday night.

An SKB Wheel Ezz would be nice if you can find one. They were used by Sierra in the 90s. Molded case with alu valances.

Using your MSA measurements, check online for suitable molded cases from SKB or Pelican. Expect to pay in the $400 neighborhood for an empty case, then you'd need to add protective foam sized for the guitar. These are lightweight and durable.

Or as suggested, search sizes for 2 cases, one for the body and one for the pedal rack, legs and rods.

There have been several discussions in the past on using padded keyboard gig bags to transport steel guitars. Again, probably one for the guitar, one for the pedal board and legs. Good luck finding something and getting started with pedal steel picking...

I have a used set of Keith Hatton split cases that are too big for the D10 Emmons I bought it for, perhaps they will work for you. The larger case has wheels and inside dimensions of 33.5" x 11.5". There are a few extra screw holes in the large case Tolex but otherwise they are both clean as new.

Make me an offer if it will serve your needs.
