Who are the last living big name touring steelers in the 1960's

Post by Gary Hoetker »

What an era it was. I remember LLoyd Green although I don't think he toured much; Norm Hamlet; and maybe Jay Dee Maness. Sorry if I missed the others. No disrespect meant.

...couple I can think of...Doug Jernigan....Bobby Black far as I know.

Considering an average age of say. 20 in the 60s, would put many of them in the 80s + probably not too many left.

Sonny Garrish is still alive-I talked with country singer Chalee Tennison earlier this week and she told me she sees Sonny every now and then in Hendersonville, Tennessee. She told me Sonny is retired now after playing steel and dobro on so many great records. In 1999, Chalee was signed to Asylum Records, and her self-titled record was released on the label, and Sonny Garrish was the steel player on the record. Norm Hamlet is now playing a GFI Ultra S-10 with his name on it, and now plays shows with a keyboardist named Mario, and they play Merle Haggard's songs with keyboards and steel guitar. Another steel player still with us is Jim Vest, who played steel on Vern Gosdin's tribute to Ernest Tubb, "Set 'Em Up Joe", and also Dan Dugmore.

Smiley Roberts played with some big names through the years. He's still with us doing good, in fact he told me the other day he sneezed and cured two people sitting nearby.

Also, Al Perkins!

I toured nationally with Ronstadt in 1968 when I was 20, and the Wildweeds in 1969 when I was 21.

I moved to TX in 1972 and that's when my touring life really accelerated with Michael Martin Murphey, Jerry Jeff Walker, BW Stevenson, Alvin Crow, Gary P Nunn, and other artists, culminating with Johnny Bush for 14 years from 1992 through 2006.

Because of a rare hearing issue involving pitch differentiation, in 2022 I fully retired from performing onstage at age 76. I will be 78 on November 1 of this year.
My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?

In 1965, Paul Franklin Jr was 11 yrs old and Tommy White was 5yrs old.

They were likely not touring in the 1960’s.
