Amish Pedal Steel

Post by Darrell Criswell »

If you want to listen to some great pedal steel look up Ben and Rose on youtube playing Slowly and Surely. They are old order Amish with steel accompaniment by Daniel Beachy.

Ben and Rose sing so well together. Beautiful music.

The steel guitar is a nice touch.

There are only two options as I see it.
Either I'm right, or there is a sinister conspiracy to conceal the fact that I'm right.

Very nice stuff indeed!,, "Old order Amish"?.. yeah I dunno. Perhaps a more liberal subset than that. Electricity in the house, Refrigerator, strat, modern acoustic/electrics, etc... Also the southern accents are unmistakable in their voices.. I see a lot of Amish folks, and never once have i heard a local accent in their speech. Many are really hard to understand as their communities are relatively cloistered, and they get their dialect/accent from what they hear every day in the community, not from the outside world around them.. He did have the Amish "bowl cut" hairstyle, and maybe the Amish in my area and Pa. are different than southern Amish communities, but most old order Amish have very little contact with their neighbors outside of doing business with them locally, and I don't think many have a strat leaning against the wall, or making youtube videos!. Some New Order Amish subsets allow limited internet, but still no tv or radio. Old Order Amish are VERY conservative, and I have doubts thats what these kids are.. In any case, I loved their style, and the steel was terrific, nice old school country E9.... bob
I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

no gear list for me.. you don't have the time......

This is really nice. And I'm pretty stunned to learn that this is all going on about 45 miles south of me, as the crow flies, in Juniata County, PA. I had no idea. I have friends down that way, I will see what they know about this.

This article should clear up any misconceptions about Ben and Rose - https://savingcountrymusic.com/young-ol ... ntry-song/ - pay particular attention to the comments by Conrad Fisher, who produced this and some other recordings by Ben and Rose. They are apparently from down in Lancaster County, but Conrad Fisher runs an old converted church in Mifflin/McCoysville, PA as a country/bluegrass/gospel venue and recording studio - https://theragamuffinhall.com/ - apprently this is relatively recent, i.e., in the last few years. He has had some pretty great shows the last couple of years, including Rhonda Vincent, the Malpass Brothers. and more.

The steel is by Daniel Beachy - https://www.youtube.com/@SteelinDan - who is a forum member from Georgia - memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=14971. He does pedal steel overdubs - https://www.facebook.com/danielbeachymusic/ - nice playing, Daniel.

Ben and Rose are apparently old-order Amish, and all I see them doing is singing and playing acoustic guitars. No 'lectricity, that's at the place they recorded. And it should be noted that lots of Amish interact with the rest of us, up around here anyway. We have a lot of Amish communities in this part of Central PA. We had an Amish crew put a new roof on our house a few years ago. There are lots of Amish builders here. During summer, I buy most of my vegetables, baked goods, and other stuff from Amish farmers from Belleville who set up here in State College 3 times week. I've known them for many years. The Amish I've known definitely stick to their traditional ways, and there is some level of divide. But they are hard-working, smart, and friendly.

In my neck of the woods, we have several Mennonite families, very nice people.
They have electricity and modern equipment but no instruments in their church.

Dave, thanks for the lovely compliments. I’m privileged to play on their recordings.

To echo what you said, yes, Ben and Rose are really old order Amish. They’ve been hesitant to do live shows much simply for that reason. YouTube allows talent to thrive that would’ve once been hidden away.

You should 100% go see a show at Ragamuffin Hall! Tell Conrad I sent you! :D
Why suck at one instrument when you can suck at many?
