I remember in 1994, I saw a video where Conway Twitty sang "Rainy Night In Georgia " and there was a beautiful Emmons D-10 in the video, but I didn't know any steel players back then, and right after I started playing the steel guitar, I became friends with Robby and wanted to know who was playing that Emmons, so Robby Turner answered back and told me he was the steel player in the video. And, every time we talked, we always talked about that Emmons guitar. I then found out he played steel on a few Gary Allan records-he played steel on the first single off Gary's "See If I Care" record called "Tough Little Boys" and he also played on every song on Gary's "Alright Guy" record and also, he filled in for "Cowboy " Eddie Long on Jamey Johnson's song "In Color" because Eddie wasn't feeling well. I found out that he also played steel on some of the songs on Ricochet's third record when they were signed to Columbia Records

Sorry to hear this, he was a great Steel Guitarist. I first heard of him in 1981. I was at Zane Beck's house picking up a new BMI Steel Guitar. I saw this double ten BMi sitting there waiting for repairs. It had a name plate that had his name Robby Turner. I asked Zane about his Steel Guitar and Zane said you know him? I said no, he told me "Well that's Charlie Rich's Steel Man." I later heard Robby Turner and realized what a great talent he was in the Steel Guitar World. RIP Robby

Man, What a shock!, I knew Robbie was not in the best of health and has a car accident, but this hits hard. He was such a nice guy and have loved all the great music he played on.

The first steel show I attended had Robbie there PSGA in Norwalk and fairly recently he played our show and was so fantastic. THis one hits really hard. My prayers are out to his family and friends.

sad news indeed, Robby will be so missed.
he's one of the best who ever lived and no one played with more soul. he played with all the best and more importantly he played with all his heroes who became some of his best friends.

I didn't know him well but I did get to shake his hand and chat one night at Music City Grill and it was like we'd been friends forever. he was that kind of guy.

Quite honestly, a legend and such an innovative player. When I think of style, I think of Robby and his work. I will greatly miss him and his work for our instrument and the recording industry.

Terrible news! So sick of the C WORD...lost both of my parents to cancer...exactly 3 weeks apart in 2003.

Anyway, very sorry about Robbie...I first heard him on a video with The Highway Men. It appeared to be an outside show...& he took a fast solo, that blew my mind! Kris looked over at him with a big smile. I became an instant fan right then! Then I saw him play with Waylon & his playing was spot on great.

Seems the last few years were not very good for him...very sad; from the car accident, to cancer, & whatever else he was going through.

Rest in peace with God in Heaven, Robbie.
