Word Processor; Where's Sort?

I can't find sort on my Microsoft Word Processor. Any Advice?

What wordprocessor do you have?? MSWord97 has some sort functions. Just click on the help question mark and the "assistant" will come up. Enter sort and it will list the various sorts that you can do and how to do them.

Jack,
I have what came with Windows 98 (2nd Edition) and can't find anything like that. It has Sort on the spredsheet. But no where on Word Processor can I find Sort.

Are you talking about MS Works or the Wordpad that comes with Windows? MSWorks does not have a "sort" function in the Wordprocesser section that I can find. The Wordpad is a very basic wordprocessor and there's not a lot of options with it.

Thanks for looking Jack. I guess they think the only thing you're supposed to do with a word processor is type letters.
I started out with an Amiga 500 and up until six months ago used an Amiga 2000HD. With a 7.14 MH CPU! All I used was the processor and spreedsheet. It even had spell check while typing. It was slow but then I'm not to sudden myself so we got along ok. It had Sort and Mac has Sort so I guess Bill Gates forgot to copy that.

If the MAC does everything then maybe you should have bought a MAC. Windows is strictly an operating system with a few utilities thrown in at a relatively cheap price. It's not meant to be a complete all in one everything system. If you go to Linux it is the same way.

The other programs you have on your PC were either installed by the Computer manufacturer or additional software the user buys and installs. You get what you pay for when you get preloaded software from a manufacturer.

I didn't know that the MS Office word whacker had a sort function....

Why would you need it?

Excel & Access has such but not "Word" or "Word 97"

CORAL WORDPERFECT 6 THRU 9 all have "sort' but then again WP is more of a"professional office" word processing program and has more bells & whistles than MS WORD. MS Word was made for home use by the average home computer person. I have both and I will say MW word is easier to use than WP. I have been using WP since the days of 5.0, 1989. In fact before computers came along I set printers type by hand and Linotype. 99% of computer users who use WP or MS word processing don't know what are, POINTS and how to use this printers measurement rather than going with INCHES, or for the matter what is a, PICA or En or M, ligatures, how about a slug or furniture in printers teams. Quoin keys????

Funny - I've always been of the opinion that Word is the superior package. No comparison to me.

I just loaded up my old Word 97, clicked Help and typed in "sort". It will sort lists of files, sort a list or table, etc. Can't say if MS Works will do that, but MS Word definitely CAN!

Kenneth - Em and En quads??? Cool - haven't heard anybody talk about that stuff in years. Yep, know the linotype very well - used one for several years. Played with Heidleburg presses and the old M. Verticles as well.

Nice to know there are others around who remember what real printing was like

MSWord is the Microsoft "professional" wordprocessor program. At one time WordPerfect was THE professional or commerical wordprocessor program. But when WP was sold to Novell it seemed like they started losing market share and lost their lead in the wordprocessing market. Corel, since buying wordperfect, has tried to resurrect wordperfect's market share but the MS Word seems to be the predominant "professional" wordprocessor.

Even a lot of the Federal Government, that was predominately WordPerfect has migrated to the MS Office suite which includes MSWord.

Sorry Jack but I'm now employed by he Feds, WORDPERFECT #8 & 9 is the main WP where I work.
There's about 200-225 desk tops, all personnel are working with COREL and that's just in South Miami. The other locations (almost a thousand) are also working with COREL WP #8 & 9. COREL is hooked into the country wide computer system. I will agree that MS WORD is a much easier WP software to use but there are features that it does'nt have compared to COREL WP #9. Again, COREL is for the more professional office users where as MS WORD is for home and the kids. I worked on both programs and I like both of them. Been doing word processing since 1965.

JOHN THE PRINTER: I too had once worked on the Heidelberg, Chandlier/Price etc., letterpresses as well as the small offset presses. Never did reach the 4 & 5 color presses.

Did tons of FINGER PRINTING for twenty years, got messy at times (not on myself but the other party, cooperation was the key in Finger Printing, of course I always won), sure did pay well. I still have my PICA gauge form High School. Haven't touched the California job case in 30 years. Those were the times when only teenage boys went to TRADE VOCATIONAL schools, seems now a days it's re-educational social mandated public schools. Did you see last weeks news about the TOP 10 COUNTRIES regarding who leads in MATH, good old U.S.A. did not make the top 10.

Maybe next time I retire it's back to the old country, HEIDELBERG LAND, maybe they'll even let me run one again but do they still make letterpresses???

Sorry Kenneth, but I neither agree with your assessment, nor with your interpretation of which package is more widely used. And I would bet that there are PLENTY of folks - myself included - with your experience and more that would concur.

Hey you guys I thought the topic here was Sort on the Microsoft Word
Processor? And I stated that Bill Gates must have forgot to copy that from
Mac and Amiga.

Jack closed a couple of threads because I was off topic. One was about
computer problems. I replyed that most of my Problems was man caused.
Man I like to mess with all them settings. To me, thats how you learn and
i’ve had to run my “Quick Restore” three times because i’ve had it so
messed up. But i’m learning.

I’ve had My PC since March. If you’ve used an Amiga, Windows looks an
works pretty much the same. One of the first things I did was type up a
Little League Roster with phone numbers. There were two sets of brothers
on the team. So the brothers names and phone numbers would be togather I
looked for the Sort button but couldn’t find it.
So if I want to use Sort I have to use the spreedsheet which to me is much
more work. But it could be worse I guess because I hear some say all they
have is that Note Pad.

Highlight the list you want to sort, and then go to the menu bar (top line) and click Table > Sort. Done deal.

Under the Insert pull down menu I found Table and it opens a window that says Insert Table which appears to be a format of some kind but no Sort. This is Windows 98, 2nd edition and the Word processor from Works.
I don't think it has one. It works just fine but it would be nice to have had Sort. But thanks for the try.
