Did Paul Franklin play in stereo with Dire Straits live?
Hi guys, I've searched the various posts here on the forum but I've never found any information about whether Paul Franklin played in stereo during the On Every Street tour with Dire Straits? Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks to everyone who replies to my post. Francesco

If I remember correct he said he used the Mesa Studio pre into 2 PV Nashville 400 power amp in. I don't remember what he said about effects. Maybe he'll see this and tell us.

Hi Tony, thank you so much for leaving your comment. In fact, if you watch Mark Knopfler's Live in London 1996, Paul has a particular rig. On the floor behind him, you'll see two Peavey Nashville Limiteds, and resting on top of them is a digital rack effect. Resting on top is the Mesa studio preamp, and on the Mesa is a rack tuner, and finally, resting on the TC Electronic 2290. This was Paul's rig at that concert. It had a spatial sound, just the way I like it. See the link below and you'll understand. There's the whole concert in full, that's the Paul Franklin I've known since 1990 with The Notting Hillbillies, then live tour with Dire Straits, and then he did this live in 1996, if you look on YouTube there's the complete live entitled Mark Knopfler live in London 1996, and there you'll see what Paul Franklin does, he has a tone with space steel, that's the Paul sound that I like....

I've watch probably all the Dire Straits/Paul Franklin videos, and my favorite is "Walk of Life" from the On the Night tour. His solo/ending, while similar to other tours, just seems to have an extra kick to it.

Hi, I have the video and audio collection of the entire 1991/92 Dire Straits tour, if you look on my YouTube channel there is a video I dedicated to Paul where you will hear 12 different solos from Walk of Life, I think they are incredibly fantastic and I think you have never heard them in your life as it is unobtainable material, every night he did a different solo on both Walk of Life and Brothers in Arms, there is also a video on my channel dedicated to the solo from Brothers in Arms and there you understand that Paul was a genius of steel.Richard Sinkler wrote: 15 Sep 2025 3:54 pm I've watch probably all the Dire Straits/Paul Franklin videos, and my favorite is "Walk of Life" from the On the Night tour. In order for Paul to have gone Stereo, his guitar would have to have two pickups. You cannot achieve actual "Stereo" with just one pickup. That is what I have heard Paul himself explain before. Does the guitar he used on that tour have two pickups?

I may be wrong, but I believe the red and yellow front guitar had two pickups per neck. Don't know if they each had an output jack.Tim Harr wrote: 20 Sep 2025 5:46 pm In order for Paul to have gone Stereo, his guitar would have to have two pickups. People often confuse the term "stereo". "True stereo" would indeed need a pickup for each channel. Most think that stereo effects outputs are "true stereo" but the signal fed into them from the guitar is mono..

I don't know the answer to the question, I'll leave that to Paul, but I do know that Mr. Franklin built some guitars with dual pickups, dual inputs and stereo volume pedals 2 in 2 out.
Also, true if you only have one mono input/output to a sound system it is still mono but you can still go in mono and come out of an fx processor to 2 stereo ins and outs and have the processors ouput stereo signals. Also having 2 different size/types of speakers does enhance the stereo image.

Paul had two pickups per neck. If, as you claim, it's stereo, using a jack for each guitar, it should have four jacks, given that it has four pickups. This isn't true, as you can see from the videos, Paul only has two jacks plugged into his steel guitar during the tour. When he talks about stereo, I think he's referring to the fact that you connect your power amp head to two cabinets and connect the stereo effects to the Mesa Boogie preamp, this is to get a bigger, more resonant sound. I don't think there could be anything else.

Jerry Paul pedal has two inputs and two pots but he himself said that he has a spare pot in case the main pot gives out during the concert, Paul wrote this in some posts I read in the past.Jerry Overstreet wrote: 21 Sep 2025 11:04 am I don't know the answer to the question, I'll leave that to Paul, but I do know that Mr. Franklin built some guitars with dual pickups, dual inputs and stereo volume pedals 2 in 2 out.
