hofner 6-string lap

Post by geordiejimbob »

I've got a yellow mother-of-plastic Hofner 6-string. the pickup is particularly quiet-anyone know if this is normal or is it knackered? also any info on history or age would be appreciated

Höfner lap steels are rarely seen in the USA; those few that I've seen seem to have been imported by GIs who were stationed in Germany during the 1950's.
Unfortunately I have almost no information about these lap steels, as they don't seem to have ever been officially imported into the USA.
I would love to find out more myself.

The few Hofners I've played have all had pretty decent output. Maybe an impedence problem with your amp?

Check out the recent "John Lennon" thread on the Forum for some interesting info and pictures of these.

If you need any bits for Hofner Guitars, a Shop called Music Ground in Doncaster, in Yorkshire bought them all up a couple of years ago. They actually built several new lap steels from the old parts.
I have two Hofners,(neither one a steel) and they both have pretty lively pickups for a sixties guitar, compared with a Strat of the same age.

I used at work at Music Ground, they have a few Hofner steel - but they are just original bodies not hardware. They are pretty good at finding original spares though, they are currently relocating everything from Donacaster to Leeds. Steel enquiries are best directed to John Brady on 0113 2438165, he's a very helpful/knowledgable guy and is always glad to hear from steel players and try to help them out if he can.
